Template essentials
Read a button template
The advertised size usually describes the finished button. It does not tell you how large to cut the paper. A conventional wrapped-paper button needs artwork beyond its face so the edge can fold around the shell.
- Face
- The front area identified by the supplier's template. Keep the overall composition balanced here.
- Safe area
- The inner region intended for important words, faces and logos. Background artwork can extend beyond it.
- Paper cut
- The outline you cut before pressing. Extend the background to this boundary; do not put the headline in the wrap area.
- Film
- The covering layer used by the specified supply system. Its dimensions and assembly role are not interchangeable with the paper's.
Concrete example: Tecre's standard 2¼-inch workflow uses a 2.625-inch paper cut (66.675 mm). A photo-insert workflow can use a 2.225-inch photo cut instead. The thicker photo stays on the face while the covering film wraps. Follow the exact process, not a guessed universal margin.

Size literacy
Inches and millimetres
One inch is exactly 25.4 mm. That makes 2¼ inches exactly 57.15 mm, and 3 inches exactly 76.2 mm. A product advertised as 58 mm or 75 mm belongs to a different nominal size, even if a retailer also uses a familiar inch label.
Record both the supplier's label and the measurements in its template. Preserve the supplier family when choosing a profile. A ruler or caliper check helps identify a mismatch; it does not by itself establish that shells, backs, dies and cutters work together.

Before buying supplies
Match the machine and supplies
Write down the maker, model, die, supply family and cutter before ordering refills. Two machines that produce buttons with the same advertised diameter can require different components. Badge-A-Minit is a separate family; an inch label alone does not resolve that distinction.
A kit's name can also hide an important difference. American Button Machines' “3-in-1” professional kit contains three separate machines for 1-inch, 2¼-inch and 3-inch buttons. It is not evidence that one machine swaps between all three dies.
- Find the model number on your press or its original order.
- Locate the manufacturer's matching supply and artwork instructions.
- Match the intended product: pinback, magnet, mirror or another assembly.
- Use one documented combination for a small trial before making a batch.

At the printer
Print at actual size
A correct design can become the wrong size in the print dialog. “Fit”, “shrink oversized pages” and borderless enlargement may alter the artwork. Select the intended paper size and a 100% or actual-size setting, then check what your printer actually produced.
- Export the design or sheet for the required paper and supplier profile.
- Confirm the printer dialog's paper size matches the exported sheet.
- Print one proof with scaling at 100%; inspect any separate driver scaling or borderless setting.
- Measure the printed cut boundary horizontally and vertically. Compare with the profile's documented cut dimensions.
- Cut and press a sample with the intended supplies. Inspect text placement, wrap and the completed front and back.
If one dimension is wrong, correct the print or profile setup before adjusting artwork to compensate. Screen size and browser zoom are not physical calibration. Small buttons especially reward a real-size readability check.

ButtonMakers.net publishes original page-layout cut paths for Silhouette Studio. Its downloads are ZIP files containing Studio3 templates with a face-line layer. They are for ButtonMakers’ pinned-back sizes and Brick City Button Makers Tecre machines. Match your exact machine and supplies, then measure and press one sample before a batch.

A complete first run
Make your first button
Start with one button, one original design and the instructions for your actual machine. A simple photo and a short line of text make it easier to see placement problems than a crowded design.
- Choose: open “Manage production profiles” and find the correct size, shape and supplier family. Read its dimensions and status.
- Compose: add your artwork in Studio. Keep essential text and faces inside the safe area; extend background color or imagery to the cut boundary.
- Save: download a portable design file before the production trial. It preserves the selected profile ID and revision.
- Proof: export, print at actual size and measure the result.
- Make: cut the artwork, then load and operate the press in the order specified by its manufacturer.
- Inspect: check the edge, pin orientation and readability. Make the batch only after the sample meets your requirements.

Beyond circles
Design for hearts and other shapes
The market research found 18 shape categories, including hearts, stars, cat heads, eggs, shields and T-shirts alongside familiar rounds, rectangles and ovals. Those categories cover both make-it-yourself tooling and outsourced products. Finding a shape for sale does not establish that your press can make it.
For a non-round button, width and height are only the bounding box. They do not define a heart's notch, a star's points, corner radii or the allowance around each curve. ChiButtons lists a heart face as 53 × 57.5 mm and paper bounds as 63 × 70 mm: a useful size reference that still needs the exact cutting contour.
ButtonGenie's specialty contours are marked approximate when no verified die outline is available. Use those profiles to compose and explore; compare the result with the supplier's actual template before production. A draft margin is an assumption, not a manufacturer specification.

Your ButtonGenie setup
Build your production menu
The full catalog remains available while your main size menu stays focused. In Studio, open “Manage production profiles”, search a size, supplier, model or profile ID, and check “In my production menu” for the profiles you plan to use.
Your selections stay on this device. The current design's profile remains selectable even if you remove it from the production menu, so changing preferences never silently changes artwork.
- Published dimensions
- The profile contains sourced cut and safe bounds for a simple contour. It still needs a physical press trial.
- Draft profile
- Some margins or outlines are assumptions. Read the dimensions and source details before printing.
- Profile ID
- ButtonGenie's identifier and revision for the stored geometry. It is separate from a maker's model number.
- Machine model not established
- The research has not established a specific machine ID for that entry. Do not infer one from the nominal size.
Research records lacking both face dimensions are listed separately and cannot be selected. The four original generic round profiles remain unchanged so older artwork retains its geometry.

Working with a supplier
Prepare an outsourced order
An outsourced product's artwork requirements belong to that supplier and product. They are not instructions for an unrelated desktop press. Even one supplier may specify different templates for its DIY machines and its custom service.
Download the exact product template and check size, contour, orientation, accepted file types and color requirements. Keep essential elements inside its safe region. Check whether special finishes need separate artwork layers, masks or proofs.
ButtonGenie's ordinary Canvas artwork uses RGB. A design preview is not a certified CMYK conversion, foil separation or approval proof. Where the supplier requires those, prepare the required files through its documented process and review its proof before authorizing production.

Event preparation
Prepare an offline booth
ButtonGenie's editor, local saves and exports do not require a cloud round trip. Before an event, load the production app online and allow its offline assets to finish caching. Then test the whole workflow with your device disconnected.
- Open the app, choose a production profile and load the artwork you intend to use.
- Disconnect from the network, reload, edit, save, reopen and export a design.
- Test the actual printer connection, paper and cutter at the venue or in a comparable setup.
- Save portable backups and keep a known-good printed sample beside the press.
- Keep local copies of your equipment instructions; external reference links and optional cloud features still need connectivity.
Use a simple trial record: date, maker/model, die, supply SKU, cutter, paper, printer/driver, profile ID/revision, intended dimensions, measured dimensions and observed result. Change one variable at a time when investigating a failed wrap or poor alignment.
